The practice probably began as soon as humans first started to observe astronomical cycles, with some of the earliest evidence dating from the 3rd millennium BCE. ![]() Through closely observing and monitoring the location of the stars and planets, astrology sought to understand human behaviour and predict events based on the influence of these celestial bodies. A key example of such a discipline is astrology, a broad field concerned with the search for meaning and predictive information in the sky. There were also a number of areas of academic enquiry enriched by these exchanges that are generally no longer considered sciences, such as alchemy, but which nether the less form an important part of the shared heritage and legacy of these routes and which played important roles in the development of the sciences. Throughout the long history of these routes, a blending of civilizations and people resulted in the sharing of various knowledge bases and the creation of pluralistic disciplines of scientific study still recognised today including medicine, mathematics, geography, cartography, and astronomy. The position of various celestial bodies (planets, moons, asteroids) at the time of our birth reflects deep truths about who we are and what will happen to us, astrologers claim. Astrology rests on a simple foundation: as above, so below. I know I’ve only caught a glimpse of it in my research. It is a complicated universe to wrap your head around, this astrology. They claim not to care if it’s scientific or not, and many even say they don’t believe in it. Whether or not that’s true, it certainly is useful, and that’s also the stance of many modern users of astrology. In the midst of our pandemic, astrologers are reporting better business than usual. It may surprise us to learn that in an age of genetic sequencing and powerful telescopes, a system of divination conjured up in the Levant thousands of years ago is still alive and well. After having put up with decades of scientific probing, it has retreated to the one area that shields it from a rational critique: mysticism. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When the ox was almost at the finishing line, the rat slid in front, and became the first lucky animal of the Chinese zodiac. He made the ox carry him on condition that he sang for the ox. The result was that the cat was too late for the party. ![]() But on that very morning, the rat was too excited to recall the promise. Legend has it that a god beckoned all animals to bid him farewell before his departure from Earth. Signs or animals are determined by the lunar year in which you were born. The Chinese zodiac, or shengxiao, refers to the circle of 12 animals that measure the cycles of time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Due to the conflicting energies, some irresolution and uncertainty in areas under the impact of the opposition. There is a need for cooperation so as to establish harmony. While they are opposites, one is not complete without the other. The planet in every 7th house from where a planet is placed in its opposition. In the example chart on the left, Rahu and Sun/Ketu are exactly in opposition. Opposition forms when two planets are exactly opposite each other, meaning there is a difference of 180 degrees in their placement. Here is an example chart that we would refer to study about these aspects in detail. These angles are called Sextile (60 degrees), Square (90 degrees), Trine (120 degrees) and Opposition (180 degrees). ![]() The angular distance of 60 degrees, 90 degrees, 120 degrees and 180 degrees is specifically relevant as these aspects are more powerful in shaping the character and life of the native. Some aspects are considered especially important in Vedic Astrology. An aspect refers to a certain angular distance of one planet from the other. The zodiac circle consists of 360 degrees in total, divided in 12 parts it allots 30 degrees to each sign. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Astrology, the sixth house holds equal importance to other houses in a native’s birth chart. It also denotes the attitude of a person towards their responsibilities whether at home, work, or towards society in general.
